On Thursday, October 8th, our grade five students will begin to take home their laptop each day. During these first few weeks of school, each of the grade five classrooms have gone through a series of lessons designed around digital citizenship as well as proper care and usage of the MacBooks. Our goal is to be sure each student is prepared for the responsibility of caring for and transporting the MacBooks between home and school. Before taking the laptop home, the students will take an online quiz to be sure they understand responsible use and digital citizenship issues related to laptop usage.
Earlier in the month, each classroom reviewed and discussed the ASW ES Responsible Use Policy. You should already have seen this policy, discussed it with your child and returned the signed document to your child’s teacher. It is our hope that you will support the same responsible use of technology at home as we do on campus.
Please take some time with your child to discuss and complete the attached “Parent/Student Laptop Home Use Agreement” and return it to school with your child. Use this document as an opportunity to talk about proper usage at home and to set some ground rules for where, when, and how the MacBook can and should be used. For children at this age, we recommend that parents actively monitor their child’s computer use by having them work in a common area of the home.
During the school day, the laptops will be stored in a lockable cart in the grade five classrooms. Students are required to bring the laptop (fully charged) and the charger with them to school each day. If, for some reason, the student does not want to take the laptop home on a specific night, they can discuss this with their teacher and leave it in the locked cart in the classroom.
If you would like more information related to this topic, please attend our Parent Information Meeting on Thursday, October 1 from 9:30 - 10:00 (following the ES PAC).
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or the grade 5 technology coach (Kris Sheehan, ksheehan@aswarsaw.org).
Please look through the documents below. The Responsible Use Policy and the Parent/Student Home Use Agreement must be signed and returned before your child can take the laptop home.
