Parent Technology Connection - Creating with iMovie
Tuesday, April 12 from 8:45 - 10
Please join Simon May and Kris Sheehan as we explore iMovie as a tool you can use to capture and share your special events. At the elementary school, our students use iMovie to document learning, share knowledge and reflect on experiences. In this session, we will learn how to add and edit video and images, add text, transitions, and sound to make a video you can share with friends and family. This would be a great way to document your upcoming spring or summer holidays!

Parent Technology Connection - Using Keynote to Create Stunning Presentations
On Tuesday, March 8th at 8:45 am, please join Simon May and Kris Sheehan, our ES Technology Coaches in the Teaching and Learning Center for an exciting learning opportunity. During this session, you will learn how to create your own presentations using Keynote. With this tool’s clean and simple interface, you can add text, images, sound and video to any presentation. You can easily add transitions and animation to make your presentation come alive. Keynote is available on the Mac laptop, iPad and iPhone. For this training, we will be using the Mac laptop application. We will provide laptops for those of you who don’t have your own. We are looking forward to another fun and educational session!

In this session, we will discuss privacy settings, iPad safe settings, tools to support a balanced use of technology, and other strategies to manage the online life of both you and your child. We had a wonderful morning, coding with parents from ASW! We were happy to have parents from all divisions attend our Parent Hour of Code event! During this hour, our parents learned the basics of coding, created loops, used if then statements, used until statements and had a lot of fun. Watch the video below to see the excitement!

Selecting Apps and Managing Gmail

On Thursday, December 3, immediately following the Elementary PAC meeting, please join Simon May and Kris Sheehan, our ES Technology Coaches, for another Parent-Technology Connection (PTC) session. We will begin by sharing useful websites for finding and reviewing educational iPad apps. Then, we will guide you through strategies for using and organising your Gmail. You will learn about organizing your email into different viewing options, archiving emails, using labeling as a way to more easily sort your email, adding signatures and any other topics that we have time for during this hour. We will have a number of laptops we can share, but please bring your own if you have one. This session will be most helpful if you have your own gmail account, but we have created practice accounts for those who are not currently using gmail. We are looking forward to seeing you all!

Grade 3 Students learn to search the internet

As our third graders begin to look at informational text, one important skill is learning how to search for online information. In this lesson, we talk about different types of searches and how to select keywords when doing an internet search. We talk about the different places where we can get information, including books, online databases, and by searching online. We discuss the benefits of each of these tools for learning. The students then practiced answering specific questions by using keywords to conduct searches as they went on a searching scavenger hunt.

First Parent Technology Connection

Parent Technology Connection
We really enjoyed connecting with parents at our first Parent Technology Connection (PTC) meeting on Tuesday, November 10th. In this meeting, we started by sharing the tools our students use at the elementary school. Then, parents brainstormed and discussed what their children have learned and what they would like their children to learn regarding technology. Parents also discussed what topics and tools they would like to learn more about this year so that we can better plan for our future meetings. We then looked at how to set up and share a Google Doc and had time to practice so that we can better understand how to use this tool in our busy lives.

Searching and evaluating web sources

Our fifth graders are beginning their unit on informational text and I had the opportunity to work with 5M to look at searching for and evaluating information we find on the web. I have worked with this group of students since grade 3 and it was rewarding to see how much they know and understand about searching and evaluating online information. We started with learning about the advanced search features, specifically looking at using quotation marks, sorting sites by date, and filtering by copyright features. After a discussion on searching, we reviewed what to look for in a web site to determine its validity. I was amazed at what these kids know and remember from past years. World Math Day - Un week

At the elementary school we had a great time participating in the World Math Day event during UN Week. Our focus for this event was not only to improve our fluency skills in math, but also to have fun competing with students around the world. Throughout the week, our students competed against children from over 80 countries. Flags from each of these countries were displayed on the tower windows in the elementary school entrance. These flags will stay up for the next two weeks, so come by and take a look!

World Math Day - Un Week

To celebrate UN Week the elementary school will be participating in the World Math Day event organized by Mathletics. This event takes place from Tuesday, October 13 - Thursday, October 15. We will be celebrating math on Wednesday, October 14th as part of UN Week. You will receive login information for your child to access this event. With this login information, your child can participate in the math, spelling or science activities for this event. We will be focusing mostly on math for our celebration and asking our students to record the countries of the children they have competed against. Forms to record this information will come home on Monday. Please return these forms as soon as your child completes it during UN Week.

The World Education Games team is recording scores from the first 20 games each child participates in.
