Parent Tech Connection - December 3, 2015
On Thursday, December 3, immediately following the Elementary PAC meeting, please join Simon May and Kris Sheehan, our ES Technology Coaches, for another Parent-Technology Connection (PTC) session. We will begin by sharing useful websites for finding and reviewing educational iPad apps. Then, we will guide you through strategies for using and organising your Gmail. You will learn about organizing your email into different viewing options, archiving emails, using labeling as a way to more easily sort your email, adding signatures and any other topics that we have time for during this hour. We will have a number of laptops we can share, but please bring your own if you have one. This session will be most helpful if you have your own gmail account, but we have created practice accounts for those who are not currently using gmail. We are looking forward to seeing you.

Parent tech connection - November 10, 2015
Parent Technology Connection
We really enjoyed connecting with parents at our first Parent Technology Connection (PTC) meeting on Tuesday, November 10th. In this meeting, we started by sharing the tools our students use at the elementary school. Then, parents brainstormed and discussed what their children have learned and what they would like their children to learn regarding technology. Parents also discussed what topics and tools they would like to learn more about this year so that we can better plan for our future meetings. We then looked at how to set up and share a Google Doc and had time to practice so that we can better understand how to use this tool in our busy lives.
Please mark your calendars so you can attend our future PTC meetings this school year. All meetings are from 8:45 to 9:45.

Grade 5 Student Laptop Take Home Meeting - October 1, 2015
On Thursday, October 8th, our grade five students will begin to take home their laptop each day. During these first few weeks of school, each of the grade five classrooms have gone through a series of lessons designed around digital citizenship as well as proper care and usage of the MacBooks. Our goal is to be sure each student is prepared for the responsibility of caring for and transporting the MacBooks between home and school. Before taking the laptop home, the students will take an online quiz to be sure they understand responsible use and digital citizenship issues related to laptop usage.
Earlier in the month, each classroom reviewed and discussed the ASW ES Responsible Use Policy. You should already have seen this policy, discussed it with your child and returned the signed document to your child’s teacher. It is our hope that you will support the same responsible use of technology at home as we do on campus.
Please take some time with your child to discuss and complete the attached “Parent/Student Laptop Home Use Agreement” and return it to school with your child. Use this document as an opportunity to talk about proper usage at home and to set some ground rules for where, when, and how the MacBook can and should be used. For children at this age, we recommend that parents actively monitor their child’s computer use by having them work in a common area of the home.
During the school day, the laptops will be stored in a lockable cart in the grade five classrooms. Students are required to bring the laptop (fully charged) and the charger with them to school each day. If, for some reason, the student does not want to take the laptop home on a specific night, they can discuss this with their teacher and leave it in the locked cart in the classroom.
If you would like more information related to this topic, please attend our Parent Information Meeting on Thursday, October 1 from 9:30 - 10:00 (following the ES PAC).
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or the grade 5 technology coach (Kris Sheehan, ksheehan@aswarsaw.org).
Please look through the documents below. The Responsible Use Policy and the Parent/Student Home Use Agreement must be signed and returned before your child can take the laptop home.

2014-2015
Digital Creation - May 19, 2015
In the Elementary School at ASW, one way students use technology is to tell stories to demonstrate their understanding of new concepts and ideas. You can use these same fun and enriching activities this summer to document exciting travels, visits to museums, and entertaining gatherings with family and friends - or simply to add a little creativity to a rainy summer afternoon! In this session, Bruce Roadside and Kris Sheehan, the ASW elementary school tech coaches, will show you how simple it is to create videos with the iPad using iMovie, Adobe Voice, Green Screen and maybe a few others. This will be an active hands-on hour where you will get to see how quick and easy it is to create your own videos.
21st Century Learning - March 31, 2015
We hear a lot about 21st Century Learning and the skills our children need as learners, both now and in the future. But what does 21st Century Learning actually mean and how do we use technology at ASW elementary school to ensure our students are developing the life, learning, and literacy skills necessary to be successful in this connected and information-rich era. In this session, we will discuss 21st Century Learning and share the process of thought and collaboration that teachers go through to ensure technology is being used effectively. We will then have hands-on time to experiment with some of the tools our students are using in the classroom.
Digital Safety, Citizenship and literacy - Feb. 3, 2015
The elementary years are when many of our children begin using more digital and online tools in their school and personal life. At ASW, our youngest students use the iPad to learn, create and access information. In the later years, the students use a laptop and the iPad to do the same. In this session, Bruce Roadside and Kris Sheehan, the ASW elementary school tech coaches, will share how we help our students as they begin to read and search for information digitally, tread into a more social online life, and master the digital skills they will need to be successful users of technology. We will also share some resources on how you can help your children stay safe online and become positive digital citizens in our rapidly changing world.
Creating with the iPad - Dec. 2, 2014
The iPad is a wonderful tool for kids of all ages to learn and create, but it can be overwhelming to sift through all the apps that are available. Join Bruce Roadside and Kris Sheehan, our elementary school Tech Coaches, for some ideas on apps for both you and your children. We will share apps the kids are using at school and ones you can use at home that encourage creativity, require critical thinking, and enhance what the teachers are doing in the classroom. You will leave with some ideas of how both you and your children can use the iPad to foster learning and sharing.
Tech at ASW ES - Our program and Parent information information tools - Oct 28, 2014
On Tuesday, October 28th at 8:45 in the Multipurpose Room, please join the elementary school technology coaches, Bruce Roadside and Kris Sheehan, for our first ES Parent-Technology Connection (PTC) session. We will start with an overview of the ES Ed Tech program through the grade levels. Then, we will guide you through the various electronic parent information tools we use so that you can quickly and easily access information on a regular basis. Please bring a device if you have one and questions/suggestions for future PTC sessions. We look forward to connecting with all of you!
